Our planet is over 70 per cent water — primarily ocean water — yet we know more about the surface of the moon than we do the ocean. Only about five per cent of the ocean has been explored, observed and mapped, and less than eight per cent is protected from pressures such as overfishing, pollution, and the effects of climate change. As the country with the longest coastline in the world, Canada and Canadians can and should play a leading role in the exploration, conservation and sustainable management of the ocean.
